Overview



Understanding shipment performance is essential to optimize logistics operations. This article outlines the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) available in AfterShip Tracking’s analytics dashboards. These metrics help assess delivery efficiency, carrier performance, and customer experience.
For time-based metrics, calculations are based on calendar days by default. You can switch to business days depending on your operational needs.

Metric Definitions

Tracked shipmentsShipments across all statuses, excluding expired and pending.
Delivered shipmentsShipments with a delivered status.
Delivery rateThe percentage of delivered shipments
Delivery rate = (Delivered ÷ Tracked) × 100%
Pending rateThe percentage of pending and expired shipments
Pending rate = (Pending or Expired ÷ Created) × 100%
Average order-to-delivery timeThe average number of days from order placement to delivery for all delivered shipments, calculated at the shipment level
Calculation: 1. For a single shipment: Order to delivery = Processing time + Pickup time + Transit time
Average Order to delivery = Total Order to delivery days ÷ Number of shipments with non-null order-to-delivery time
Note: This is calculated only when processing time, pickup time, and transit time have values.
Average processing timeThe average number of days from shipments being ordered to processed by the merchant, calculated at the shipment level
Calculation: 1. For a single shipment: Processing time = Ship date - Order date
Average Processing time = Total shipment processing days ÷ Number of shipments with non-null processing time
Average pickup timeThe average number of days from shipments being processed to carrier pickup, calculated at the shipment level.
Calculation: 1. For a single shipment: Pickup time = Pickup date - Ship date
Average pickup time = Total shipment pickup days ÷ Number of shipments with non-null pickup time
Average transit timeThe average number of days from shipments picked up to delivered for all delivered shipments.
Calculation: 1. Transit time = Delivered date - Pickup date
Average transit time = Total transit time ÷ Number of shipments with non-null transit time.
P50/P85/P95 transit timeTransit time at the 50th, 85th, and 95th percentile respectively.
Minimum/Maximum transit timeShortest/longest transit time for delivered shipments.
Ordered shipmentsShipments with a recorded order date.
Shipped shipmentsShipments processed and ready for pickup.
Picked up shipmentsThe number of shipments picked up by the carrier (first scan)
Shipments with EDDShipments that have an original Estimated Delivery Date.
EDD coveragePercentage of tracked shipments with an Original EDD value
Calculation: (Shipments with Original EDD ÷ Tracked shipments) × 100%
Early/On-time/Late shipmentsFirst delivery attempt before/on/after the original EDD.
Trending early/on-time/late shipmentsBased on whether the current EDD is earlier/on/later than the original EDD.
Overdue shipmentsThe original EDD is in the past, and no updated EDD is available.
On-time or early rateThe percentage of tracked shipments with the first delivery attempt on or before the original EDD.
Calculation: (On-time shipments + Early shipments) ÷ (On-time + Early + Late shipments) × 100%
Exception shipmentsShipments that encountered an exception event.
Exception rateThe percentage of shipments that has an exception.
Calculation: (Shipments with exception ÷ Tracked) × 100%
Lost/Damaged/Returned shipmentsBased on specific checkpoint messages: lost, damaged, or returned to sender issues on the tracking dashboard.

1. Are calendar days or business days used in calculations?


By default, calendar days are used. You can change it to your business days in the tracking settings.



2. Why is my delivery rate lower than expected?


This could be due to a high number of tracked shipments still in transit, pending, or expired. Please wait for some time before reviewing the Shipment Analytics metrics, allowing the majority of shipments to be delivered.

3. Can I export this metric data?


Yes, you can export analytics reports from the dashboard.

4. What should I do if my transit time metrics look inaccurate?


Verify that your carriers are updating timestamps like pickup and delivery dates correctly. Missing data may skew results.
